At the Ariburnu memorial nearby are inscribed Atatürk's moving words of 1934, honouring the fallen of both sides as sons now resting together in peace, one of history's great gestures of reconciliation. It is the emotional heart of the tour.
A short way along the shore lies Beach Cemetery, one of the peninsula's most poignant resting places, its graves looking out over the Aegean. Among those buried here is John Simpson Kirkpatrick — "Simpson" — the stretcher-bearer who carried the wounded on his donkey and became an enduring symbol of the Anzac spirit.
Lone Pine was the site of one of the fiercest battles of the campaign and today holds the principal Australian memorial and cemetery, its walls bearing the names of the missing. Solemn and beautifully kept, it is the focus of the Australian commemorations held here each Anzac Day, on 25 April.
Along the ridges the opposing front lines ran just metres apart.
