Hagia Sophia

For nearly a thousand years the largest cathedral in the world, Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) has stood at the heart of Istanbul since 537 AD. Commissioned by the Byzantine emperor Justinian, later converted into an imperial Ottoman mosque, and today once again a working mosque and monument, its vast 55-metre dome, shimmering gold mosaics and towering marble columns remain one of humanity's greatest architectural achievements. Your guide unpacks its Christian and Islamic layers side by side — the single most important landmark in the city.

Blue Mosque

Facing Hagia Sophia across a garden square stands the Blue Mosque — formally the Sultanahmet Mosque — completed in 1616 for Sultan Ahmed I. It takes its popular name from the more than 20,000 hand-painted blue İznik tiles that line its cavernous interior, and it is instantly recognisable by its six slender minarets and cascade of domes rising in perfect symmetry. Still an active place of worship, it is one of the finest expressions of classical Ottoman architecture and a highlight of any Istanbul tour.

Hippodrome

Between the two great mosques lies the Hippodrome of Constantinople, once the beating heart of Byzantine public life, where crowds of up to 100,000 gathered for chariot races and imperial ceremonies. Though the ancient arena itself is long gone, its monuments still line the promenade: the 3,500-year-old Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius, the bronze Serpent Column brought from Delphi, and the ornate German Fountain. It is an open-air walk through more than a thousand years of Roman and Byzantine history.

Topkapı Palace

For almost four hundred years the Topkapı Palace was the residence of the Ottoman sultans and the administrative centre of an empire that spanned three continents. Its succession of courtyards, pavilions and gardens holds the Imperial Treasury — home to the jewelled Topkapı Dagger and the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond — alongside the sacred relics of the Prophet Muhammad, while its terraces open onto sweeping views of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. The opulent Harem quarters, where the sultan's family lived, can be added as an optional extra.

Spice Bazaar

The 350-year-old Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı, the Egyptian Bazaar) is Istanbul at its most sensory — a vaulted, L-shaped market piled high with saffron, sumac and paprika, lokum (Turkish delight), fragrant teas, dried fruits, nuts and honey. Built in 1664 and originally funded by taxes from Ottoman Egypt, it has been trading for centuries and remains a favourite stop for tasting, shopping and photography, and a lively contrast to the grand monuments before the day heads down to the water.

Bosphorus Cruise

The day ends where Istanbul's story begins: on the Bosphorus, the legendary strait that separates Europe from Asia and links the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. From the deck your clients glide past Ottoman palaces such as Dolmabahçe, the medieval fortresses of Rumeli and Anadolu Hisarı, and the elegant wooden yalı mansions that line the shore, with the two continents rising on either side. It is a serene, unforgettable finale that ties the whole city together.

Is the Istanbul City Tour private or group?

Both. It can be operated fully private for your client — ideal for couples, families and VIPs — or as a seat-in-coach group departure for larger parties. You choose the format on a booking-by-booking basis, and either way it is delivered under your brand.

Are entrance fees included?

By default the guiding, transport and Bosphorus cruise are included, and museum and monument entrance fees are quoted separately so you can control the package. Entrances — including Topkapı Palace and the Harem — plus fast-track ticketing can all be built into your net rate on request.

Can the itinerary be customised?
